Lecture: New Media Landscape

Attended the lecture on New Media Landscape. The speaker is working in a company named Ripplewerkz. Ripplewerkz is an all in one design house which offers high quality Web, Blog, Print, and Corporate ID development. A few projects they had work on was Nuffnang, XiaXue’s blog, Air Trade and so on.

He mentioned that the web had moved on from web 1.0 to the current web 2.0. The difference between these two is web 1.0 serve a one way communication while web 2.0 serve a two way communication. According to the speaker, to design a static website, it would cost up to 1.5k whereas a database website would cost up to 5k and above.

Twitter is one of the most common new media tool used by many people, including myself. Xia Xue’s “PHOTO OF THE MOMENT” post was posted via a feature created by his company. He also mentioned that working is different from completing projects in school.

As a freelancer, you have to meet the requirements set by the client, and working with other freelancer. If one of them fails to complete their part on time, the project will be unable to complete by the deadline. On the other hand, if everone produce their work on time, if the client is not satisfied with it, redoing is the only solution. Extra time would be given. In other words, working in the society is rather competitive.

After looking at what his company had designed webpages for various clients, it had captured my interest. I was curious as to how to create such interactive websites, according to the requirements of their clients.

I think it is useful to have a guest speaker to share their expertise, experience and “Tips & Tricks” of the trade. From this, we will get updated on various tools used in the working society. The experience from the speaker is important as we might go through the same obstacle they had faced. Given that, i think it would be easier to overcome it if we were stuck in the same situation.
